When used for medicinal purposes, cannabis has been a proven remedy for illnesses as epilepsy and to treat those who suffer from severe pain. There is very limited access for people who need it most, this needs to change.
Recreational cannabis should be available to all who choose to consume it. It is not up to the government to make decisions about the lifestyle choices of adults, let alone take away someone's freedom to buy, sell or consume a plant the government doesn't like.
The medicinal and recreational market could provide great opportunities for Australians. In the US, 230,000 jobs have been created due to the cannabis industry. The US now has a cannabis industry that is worth more than $10 billion and collects $247 million in tax.
Cannabis legalisation has been a policy of the Liberal Democrats since the party formed in 2001. In May, our federal member Senator David Leyonhjelm introduced a bill which will remove all Commonwealth control over cannabis. This is the first step in legalisation.
