In 2018, tobacco excise on cigarettes rose by 12.5%, from 71 cents to 81 cents per cigarette. That means a 30-pack of Winfield Blues carries $24.30 worth of excise. Senator Leyonhjelm describes this as a “huge, cruel” tax rise that will make low income, addicted smokers worse off. The government will continue with this 12.5% annual increases in tobacco excise, raising the cost of a pack of cigarettes to $40 in 2020.
