Fuel is a necessity of modern life. Without fuel, we couldn't drive our kids to school or buy groceries for the family. We couldn't catch a bus into the city to see our friends or take a drive to the beach on the weekend. The cost of fuel has greatly risen over the last few years. OPEC supply issues have affected the price, but it is the government who really inflates the price of fuel here in Australia.
The Australian Government's fuel excise is 0.39 cents of every dollar. So 39c of every dollar of fuel goes to the government. On top of that, you have to pay the government 10% for its GST. The politicians and bureaucrats take more of our money for pay rises and for wasteful government spending.
The Liberal Democrats believe that the GST on fuel must be removed as must the fuel excise. That way, regular Aussies will get a fair go and keep more of their own money in their pocket.
