This meeting we have another great speaker to bring to you: dubbed the “Australian guru of Gonzo Journalism”, Matt Thompson is an American born author, journalist, university lecturer, and former firefighter. In his field work, Dr Thompson has found himself hiking into bamboo forests to meet Filipino guerrillas, doing donuts outside Iran’s most notorious prison, ‘dying’ in traumatic ceremonies with a Colombian shaman, road-tripping Kosovo with Serb nationalists, weeping inconsolably at a Pow Wow in Portland, Oregon, and much more.
His books include the bestselling My Colombian Death, its acclaimed sequel, Running With The Blood God, and MAYHEM, a blistering first-person biography of Australia’s wildest bank robber and jail breaker, Christopher BADNE$$ Binse. A former Sydney Morning Herald journalist, Dr Thompson has been published/broadcast by Australian Foreign Affairs, the BBC, the Weekend Australian, ABC Radio National, the Sydney Review of Books, Dazed + Confused, and many others. He has a doctorate in literary Journalism.
