Australian electricity prices used to be some of the cheapest in the world, now they are some of the most expensive. Every day, the cost of food for our families, fuel to get around and things we enjoy are getting more expensive. Once a quarter, we get a dreaded electricity bill that keeps growing everytime we open it.
Electricity is a necessity, it warms our homes, cooks our food and allows us to be entertained using modern technology, so why does the government have to take more of our money to do these things. In other countries that have a GST such as New Zealand, necessities such as electricity and water are exempt from GST.
The Liberal Democrats believe that GST on electricity should be removed. It would reduce the cost of living and give hardworking Australians a fair go. Earlier this year, Senator Leyonhjelm released an alternative budget which saw GST removed from electricity to relieve the growing financial strain on Australians.
