By-Elections

What a great result on the weekend!  I'm just looking at the statistics and comparing them to how we went in the 2007 election.  With 0.83% of the vote in Bradfield this last weekend, that betters every result we had in the 2007 election that wasn't a donkey vote.  The highest non-donkey vote result we got in 2007 was 0.7% in Solomon, NT.  So I'm guessing that aside from Ben Buckley (who had a prior political profile in the area), this would be our best non-donkey vote result ever, and our best ever result for an as-yet-unknown personality!

Thanks to Jonatan Kelu for the analysis

In Higgins and Bradfield we outpolled One Nation and several of the Independent candidates. Bradfield: 0.83% and Higgins 0.51%.   Now many more people know of LDP.  Thanks to Lucy Gabb, LDP candidate for Bradfield and Isaac Roberts, LDP candidate for Higgins. Also thanks to the band of volunteers who handed out leaflets at train stations and letterboxed most of the suburbs in the electorates. From little things, big things grow.

Annual Conference - Roger Douglas Guest Speaker

Make a date in your 2010 diary to attend the LDP National Conference on Sunday 24th January in Sydney. Our VIP guest speaker will be Sir Roger Douglas, New Zealand MP and member of the ACT Party.  ACT supports similar principles to the LDP.

Sir Roger is best-known for his prominent role in the radical economic restructuring of New Zealand's economy undertaken by the Labour Government during the 1980s ("Rogernomics"). In 1993 he founded the Association of Consumers and Taxpayers (the forerunner of the ACT New Zealand Party) and in 2008 he returned to Parliament as an ACT Party backbencher.

It is an honour to have Sir Roger address the LDP’s National Conference, so make sure you are there to hear him. There is no charge and all members are welcome.

The Conference will be held at the Balmain Leagues Club, Victoria Road, Rozelle, commencing at 2pm.

Eureka Flag

The Liberal Democratic party will launch its new flag (shown here) at the National Conference to be held in Sydney on Jan 24th, 2010.

The LDP chose to adopt the Eureka flag as a symbol of the fight for civil liberties, democratic process and against excessive government interference.

The rebellion at the Eureka Stockade in Ballarat, Victoria in 1854, was significant in the early history of Australia as it was a protest against taxation and Government oppression as well as being a fight for democratic representation.

The rebellion was brought about by grievances over heavily priced mining supplies, the expense of a miner’s licence and the overbearing actions of the government and its agents, the police and military. While the events that sparked the rebellion were specific to Ballarat, the underlying grievances had been the subject of public meetings, civil disobedience and deputations across the various Victorian gold fields for almost three years.

The miners' demands included the right to vote and purchase land, and the reduction of license fees. Agitation for these demands commenced with the Forest Creek Monster Meeting of December 1851 and included the formation of the Anti-Gold Licencing Association at nearby Bendigo in 1853.

Although swiftly and violently put down, the Eureka rebellion was a watershed event in Australian political activism. The preceding three years of agitation for the miners' demands, combined with mass public support in Melbourne for the captured 'rebels' when they were placed on trial, resulted in the introduction of full male suffrage for elections for the lower house in the Victorian parliament.

The role of the Eureka Stockade in generating public support for these demands extended well beyond the goldfields, resulting in Eureka being identified with the birth of democracy in Australia.

Please join us at the launch of this flag and help celebrate the Liberal Democratic Party’s support for freedom and democracy.
